Candidates for President               Vote for One (1)
Jean Lovelace - Conover, NC

I have made baskets for 20+ years, and love our organization NCBA. I have been serving as President for the past 3 years. I served as Vice President for 5 years, 2002-2006. I was Member at Large for 2 years, 2000-2002. I co-coordinated the 1999 Convention, and was the Convention Review Committee (CRC) chairperson for 5 years, helping to compose the guidelines that are used to coordinate conventions. I also helped the board to rewrite the bylaws in 2006-2007. With the help of the board and The D'Errico's this past year I have worked to get NCBA in the 21 century by getting our organization on line. I feel that I have the knowledge and experience and the love of basketry to fulfill the Purpose of our organization, “to stimulate interest in and to perpetuate the art of basketry.” It would be an honor and a privilege to be elected as President of NCBA.

Candidates for Vice President                Vote for One (1)
Eva Green - Pittsboro, NC

Eva Green, is a fourth generation basket weaver was skillfully trained in the art of basket weaving by her mother. I have always been interested in crafts. Basketweaving gives me a chance to become creative and express my self..
Nancy DeVries - Charlotte, NC
I started out weaving on a floor loom. I really enjoyed it and thought it was quite wonderful until I took my first basket class over 20 years ago. The rest, as they say, is history. Baskets are my passion and while I still have my floor looms, their only purpose is to hold baskets and basket materials! I helped start the Vermont Basketweaver's Guild and served as its president until I moved to Charlotte in 1994. I then joined Charlotte's Web and was president for the past 10 years. I've attended many basket conventions and seminars over the years and decided that it was time for me to “give back.” So, last year I was the Co-coordinator for the NCBA convention with Pamela Zimmerman. It was a lot of work, but it also was a lot of fun and I thoroughly enjoyed myself. I particularly enjoyed getting to know you, the members of NCBA, better. I would be very happy to serve as your Vice President.

Candidates for Member at Large                Vote for Three(3)
Becki Newsome- Swansboro, NC

I was first introduced to basket weaving in 1982 at a Home Extension Meeting in Emerald Isle, N.C. I spent a day trying to learn to weave an egg basket. It was a total disaster! I wound up throwing the attempted basket away and said that this was one art dimension that was not for me.

Ten years later, in 1992 a friend that taught at White Oak Elementary School where I have been a teacher's assistant for the past 25 years, invited several of us to her home to learn basket weaving. I was resistant since my first experience was so bad. I finally did join the group, after more coaxing, and much to my surprise, I enjoyed making, and finishing, my first basket. After that, I was hooked. I have now been weaving for 17 years.

I decided that when I retire from education I wanted to own a small basketry shop. Four years ago I had the opportunity to acquire Carolina Basketry. I currently run the shop from my home. I teach basket weaving locally and through my guild, Coastal Weavers Basket Making Guild.

I joined Coastal Weavers in 2001 after talking with my friend Lisa Reid and meeting Miss Jimmie Kent at a Carolina Craftsman show. I have enjoyed my affiliation with the guild since that time. I joined NCBA In 2002 and have been attending conventions since 2003, vending there since 2005. This past year I also joined Port City Weavers.

As a guild member with Coastal Weavers, I have served my local guild as the secretary 5 out of the 8 years I have been a member. This year, I was once again elected to be our guild secretary. I enjoy being active in my guild and hope to be able to take a more active part in NCBA.

Katie Lake- Washington, NC

I have been a member of NCBA since 1996 and have been to every convention since then. I live in Washington, NC and am a member of Pamlico River Basket Buddies. I did the registration for the fall seminar held in Washington, have volunteered in the Pattern Room, Raffle, and Selling Open Classes at many conventions. I am a college graduate and a retired computer professional, having lived and worked in Michigan until retirement in 1993. I enjoy doing crafts for relaxation, especially knitting. I am an active member of several local non-profit boards and do basket weaving as a volunteer at The Blind Center in Washington. I would enjoy working for NCBA as a member-at-large.

Jeanette Miller - Asheville, NC

I have been weaving baskets for eight years, am a retired school teacher, have a husband and grown daughter (who by the way is now a member of NCBA) and was priviledged to coordinate the 2010 NCBA convention.  I love to make all kinds of baskets.  I have taught first graders and third graders how to make baskets and won several blue ribbons at the NC Mountain  State Fair in Western NOrth Carolina.  This year I won Best in Show for a basket, much to my surprise.
Lynn Hoyt - Blounts Creek, NC

I'd be honored with the privilege of serving NCBA members as Member-at-Large, voicing your ideas and questions to the board.

I've been a basket maker and gourd artist for about 10 years, after retiring from my landscape design business. Now I reside in Eastern NC with my husband and two dogs.

All kinds of basketry interests me, and I especially enjoy coiling, twining and collecting my own materials. I'm president and co-founder of The Natural Fibers Group, an NCBA affiliated guild. A regular contributor to the Reeder's Report, I'm also editor of our guild newsletter.

For the last several years I've taught at NCBA Convention. In the past, I've also served as Teacher's Liaison and in various volunteer capacities for Convention. Volunteering has been one of the most rewarding aspects of my NCBA membership. It's afforded me the opportunity to learn a little about the workings of the organization, but most importantly, it's allowed me to meet and make friends with many wonderful people who share a common interest. When I go to convention each year, I feel like I'm going home.

I'd love the chance to represent your interests, and give back to our great NCBA!

Susan Legaj - Rocky Mount, NC

My name is Susan Legaj (Lee-jay). I am running for one of the Member-at-Large positions.

I started weaving baskets in the fall of 1996 and joined NCBA in the spring of 1997. I went to the fall seminar in 1997 and was hooked for good. I have not missed a seminar or convention since. I am currently the president of the Tar River Basket Weavers in Rocky Mount where I live with my husband. We have 3 grown children and 4 grandsons. I am employed as a Customer Support Manager, and am planning on retiring in the spring. I also enjoy cross stitch and crafts in general, but basketry is my passion. I have chaired Visitor's Day at the NCBA Conventions for the last 3 years. I have found that basket friends are friends forever, and I make new friends at every basket function I attend. I would be honored if you chose me to serve in the above mentioned position.
